The coastline that frames the Waitākere Ranges is a precious taonga that faces coastal management challenges, highlighted by recent extreme weather events.
Auckland Council is planning for the future of the shorelines and how best to respond to coastal hazards and climate change over the next 100 years.
Residents now have an extended deadline until August 30 to give input on draft coastal management plans.
Waitākere Ranges Local Board chair Greg Presland says the consultation on the draft plans is a call to action for residents to consider the future of their shorelines.
“As we have seen with the coastal erosion and other devastating effects to our area’s coastlines during the extreme weather events last year, climate change must be the central consideration for future environmental planning.
“In the final days of consultation, I encourage all residents to take the opportunity to have your say on the management of our precious coastline for generations to come.”
Consultation in 2023/24 asked the community what they valued about the Waitākere Ranges shorelines and how they used them.
The feedback helped to develop a draft Shoreline Adaptation Plan for the Whatipu to South Head coastline and the Manukau North coastline. We now want to find out what you think of these plans and if you have any feedback on implementing them.
