From rugby and soccer to softball and cross country, Ōrākei has a range of fields used year-round for a variety of activities. Sports field bookings are now open for the 2024/2025 season, and can be booked through the Auckland Council website.

Did you know...

54 public sports fields in the area are used throughout winter, including 33 full-size fields. These are a mix of soil and artificial material.

10% of the region’s field bookings through Auckland Council are in the local board area.

15,000 bookings in the past year cater for a diverse range of field sports, but don’t take into account bookings for court sports such as netball or hockey.

16 of Auckland’s sports clubs make most of these bookings, as well as local schools.

15 different sports are played on the fields including kilikiti (a form of Samoan cricket) and ultimate frisbee.

890 hours per week is the capacity for use of these sports fields. This limit is in place to keep fields in the best condition to be fit-for-play.

1 million users (approximately) played on these fields in the past year according to the booking system, and we don’t even take into account spectators!

462 floodlit training hours take place each week.

“It’s great to see that locals are getting out and participating in team sports, fostering community spirit and keeping active,” says Ōrākei Local Board chair Scott Milne.
“We would like to thank our parks team for their dedication in keeping all of the grounds well maintained for these activities to take place.”

Some fields also host events like Movies in Parks. In summer, locals were invited to watch ‘Barbie’ on a giant screen at Glover Park.

Michaels Avenue was a FIFA Women’s World Cup training venue in 2023 resulting in significant upgrades to the grounds which the community has benefitted from.
