Get inspired by 'Tales of Wahine': A dynamic exhibition honouring East Auckland’s top female leaders and innovators that Howick Local Board says is a must-see!

Through compelling storytelling by Natasha Bidesi, and striking portraits taken by local photographer Bel Butler, 'Tales of Our Wāhine', an Arts Out East exhibit, is a ten-fold tribute to the remarkable women who define the East Auckland community.

Arts Out East, supported by Howick Local Board and Te Tuhi, funds and champions creative and community groups to deliver dynamic arts and culture projects in East Auckland.

The exhibition honours female leaders and change-makers, who have made a lasting impact on society, culture, and their communities.

Board chair Damian Light says, “These incredible wāhine have challenged and shaped the world they live in, creating a better place for us all. Individually, they represent a different facet of our diverse communities; together, they provide an inspiring showcase of community leadership. It’s wonderful to highlight their contributions, captured here so beautifully in both images and words.”

Women featured: Taini Drummond (O Wairoa Marae), Hope Milo, Yongrahn Park (Korean Positive Aging Charitable Trust), Claudia Robin Gunn, Katie-Rose Ruana Pemberton, Toni Mosley, Carla Ruka, Adele White, Dr Fahima Saied (New Settlers Family and Community Trust) and Cecilia Ma.

The exhibition weaves together the rich history of women's rights with a local twist, including board member Adele White.

Born and bred locally, White has gained huge respect from many locals through 23 successful years in local government, and from her former role as a police officer for 33 years.

In this work and as a health educator, marriage and funeral celebrant, mentor and public speaker, she has touched the lives of many local families.

Humbled by her inclusion, White shares, “It feels natural for me to take an active and helpful role in our community; and, to walk alongside others through their journeys.

“What an honour to be chosen to join these other beautiful wāhine in this unique exhibition!”

How were the wāhine chosen for this exhibition?

Arts Out East broker Briana Woolliams-James shares, “These women span across generations and cultures.

“They have cultivated skills, shared their knowledge, championed causes, and made room for others, generously contributing their time and expertise toward a brighter future for everyone. Their legacies inspire the wider community with a sense of resilience, strength, and the pioneering spirit of Aotearoa’s extraordinary women.”

From the Kuia of O Wairoa Marae inspiring thousands with Te Ao values, to Queen’s Service Medal winners establishing trusts for cultural communities in Tāmaki, and advocates championing the arts, their selflessness shines.
