A vital service for isolated Franklin rural communities has secured new leases.
Kawakawa Bay Ōrere Health Clinic Incorporated operates from Auckland Council-owned sites at both communities, providing critical medical services to residents.
Franklin Local Board chair Angela Fulljames says the clinics play an essential role in the community.
“Many of us take being able to go and see our doctors for granted, but when you are in a more remote part of the city, access to good medical care close at hand is something you cherish.”
Fulljames says the clinics provide local, timely primary healthcare with a general practitioner clinic held once a week.
Last year Fulljames paid tribute to the volunteers involved in the clinic when it celebrated its 40th anniversary
“The staff at Kawakawa Bay are a medical miracle in their own right, giving their time to make sure the health needs of the community, usually their own neighbours, can be met.”
Lynnette Cashmore - the wife of former Auckland Deputy Mayor Bill - was the centre’s first nurse and remains in the role today.
“I’m sure Bill would tell you how proud he is of what Lynette has done for the community,” Wairoa subdivision board representative Malcolm Bell says.
“She and people like Pat Townsend-Neal and Sandra Wood put in endless hours just to ensure there’s funding on hand and to keep things ticking over.”
