Albert-Eden Schools' Cultural Festival is a popular event where thousands of students from across the local board area gather to showcase an array of performances in front of whānau, friends, peers and community.

On Saturday 30 November, Rocket Park in Mt Albert will transform into a global stage hosting 27 cultural groups from 10 schools performing their hearts out.

Albert-Eden Local Board chair Kendyl Smith knows how exciting this event is for proud parents.

“For some students and their families this is a hugely rewarding moment – having invested hours of rehearsal all year round, they finally get to put on the show of the year,” says chair Smith.

“My daughter did kapa haka in her last year of school and so it was a really special way to celebrate the year and achievements leading up to this point.

“It’s a really fantastic opportunity for the local board to support lots of young people in pursuing their passions in dance, performance, production, and to learn about different cultures.”

One of the dedicated schools with multiple acts returning to the stage this year is Maungawhau School.

“Our school has always looked forward to their kapa haka groups participating in the Albert-Eden Schools' Cultural Festival,” says Maungawhau School principal, Delanee Dale.

“This year we will have our two kapa haka groups performing, our juniors and then our years three to six group, so over 120 students in total. Participating in kapa haka at Maungawhau has always been one of our most popular groups to join,” she says.

“Our years three to six kapa haka group even committed to rehearsing once a week before school starting at 8am. This year we will be performing a new haka written especially for our senior kapa haka.”
