Manurewa-Papakura ward Councillor Daniel Newman is looking forward to the day when pylons don't dominate an area designed to showcase natural beauty.

The much-loved Auckland Botanic Gardens continue to thrive, but Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Daniel Newman is waiting for the day when they are pylon free.

He says the removal of Transpower’s 110kv line towers, and continued work to incorporate recently purchased land at Hill Road into the Gardens, stand out as priorities.

“It’s good to see Transpower continuing to work to remove the towers in the Gardens as part of its work to decommission lines and restore the visual amenity of communities in Papakura, Takanini, The Gardens and Totara Heights,” he explains.

“With the removal of the towers, our people will be able to plant along the western edge of the park, which will further enhance the amenity of a great regional asset,” he says.

Auckland Council has installed a steel fence along part of its Hill Road boundary and while it now looks quite stark, he says the hard edge is temporary.

“The fence will be planted with Muehlenbeckia complexa, a low maintenance native scrambling vine that will soften the boundary edge and become an attractive graffiti proof replacement for the unsightly trees that were there,” Newman adds.

“On top of that native trees growing in the nursery will be planted next autumn to help screen the neighbouring petrol station,” he explains.

“The plantings will give Council time as it works through the masterplan and how we can stage development of the enlarged park over time. The important things are softening the edge of the park with Hill Road and improving the visual amenity for residents.”
