Summer is coming and so are safer speeds!
Speed limit signs installed on Aotea / Great Barrier in October 2024 mark the introduction of new speed limits on the motu in time for Labour Weekend.
“We have been working with the community and Auckland Transport on options to introduce more appropriate speeds for our island for the past five years,” says local board chair Izzy Fordham.
“Thanks to the patience and perseverance of everyone involved, we’re pleased this is finally coming into play for the safety of locals, visitors, and our native wildlife.”
Auckland Transport has confirmed the base speed limit for all roads on Aotea will be 60km/h, and a 40km/h limit will be introduced in areas with high pedestrian activity - Tryphena, Claris, Medlands Beach, Okupu, Okiwi, Port Fitzroy, and Whangaparapara.
The Director of Land Transport gave signed approval to set new speed limits on Aotea / Great Barrier in September, and the sign installation and limits come into effect on Friday 25 October.
The speed limit changes were developed following requests from the local community who expressed concern with existing 100km/h speed limits on often narrow, windy, unsealed roads. The introduction of safer limits was also welcomed and supported by the local board.
New variable speed limits close to local schools will be introduced before the start of Term One 2025. These zones will have a reduced speed limit of 30km/h at the start and end of the school day only.
