The proposed swing gates will prohibit access to private vehicle access while allowing emergency vehicles to enter.

Waiheke residents are being called to give feedback on a proposal to close a section of the Esplanade Path to vehicles this month.

The consultation asks Waiheke residents if they support a proposal to close the unpaved section between Blackpool Beach and Surfdale Beach to vehicles, making it safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and horseback riders along the scenic route.

It was requested by the Waiheke Local Board and is being run by Auckland Transport (AT).

“Waiheke residents asked the local board to support closing the Esplanade after enjoying it so much during the Covid-19 lockdowns,” explains Waiheke Local Board Chair Cath Handley

“The vision is to make it a really safe place for all walkers, especially those with young families, for cyclists, and for horse riders. But AT and the board will read your feedback and consider the numbers for and against, before making their decisions.”

The proposal outlines how the road will be closed to vehicles by installing swing gates at the northern and southern ends of the path, allowing access for emergency vehicles if needed along the route.

AT will continue to maintain the unpaved section of the road, so it is safe for emergency vehicles.

The consultation asks:

  • Do you support making the unpaved section of the Esplanade active modes only?
  • How this change may impact people travelling along the Esplanade?

You can find out more about the proposal and its background here and give your feedback using AT’s online survey here before consultation closes on 31 October.
