A jubilant bridge replacement is on the way

The picturesque Panmure Basin is set to have its Lagoon Drive connection signed, sealed and delivered in 2025.

The popular bridge that links Panmure Basin with Lagoon Drive has been closed since July 2023 due to its aging and unsafe structure, with a new bridge being built as a replacement.

There have been plenty of milestone moments in 2024, with the construction of the new bridge, and the engineering required to support it, as the team works towards a completion date of mid-2025.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair Maria Meredith is proud of the progress and excited for connections to resume.

“It’s massively pleasing to see so much work being done on the replacement bridge, and to know we’ll have a new Panmure Basin crossing for the community to enjoy in 2025.

“It’s going to make a significant difference in restoring the connection between Panmure Basin and Lagoon Drive, with a new 3-metre-wide steel bridge, that will be safe, and fit-for-purpose,” says Maria.

The new 50-metre bridge structure is being assembled alongside Pakuranga Road and requires a 600-tonne crane to move it into its Panmure Basin location.

Auckland Council Area Operations Manager Marcel Morgan says it’s been a challenging – yet rewarding – project.

“On the lagoon, we've cleared the way for the new bridge with plenty of work, including soil nailing and installing two concrete piles 30 metres underground to support the new structure. Building the bridge off-site is saving money and minimising disruption to traffic and the environment,” explains Marcel

“This approach avoids costly temporary works that would have been needed if we were building it on-site. The bridge components have been developed in a factory and pieced together nearby on vacant land used by the Eastern Busway in Pakūranga.”

During December, and through to the start of 2025, the project team will continue to deliver the new bridge, including artwork elements of the bridge design being developed with artists through Ngāti Pāoa.

“It’s going to be great for the community to watch the next steps, once the new bridge is formed, it will be ready for a short overnight trip down the Pakūranga highway, across the Panmure Bridge, before being lifted into place.”
