Every year thousands of people flock to Dove-Myer Robinson Park to enjoy Parnell Festival of Roses and the entertainment that’s on offer at the Waitematā Local Board funded event.
This year the main stage once again has an exciting and diverse lineup, from school kapa haka groups to local musicians.
Headlining the festival is Milly Tabak, playing a blend of folk and blues-rock which is sure to get the crowd on their feet.
Her new songs that she’ll be sharing are inspired by a recent trip to Texas, Nashville and New Orleans.
“It was great for inspiring a lot of new ideas,” says Milly. “It took me to a different place in my writing and I really, really love that.”
In 2018, Milly’s previous band The Miltones won the Taite Prize for Best Independent Debut. A highlight of her musical career so far was playing at WOMAD the same year, saying it was “one of the most phenomenal experiences I’ve ever had”.
Although it will be her first time at Parnell Festival of Roses, Milly is no stranger to horticulture. When she was younger, her family had a business growing topiary plants, and there are plant nurseries on the family property to this day.
“I’m still surrounded by plants, and I’ve got all my veges and herbs growing. The rose festival is quite fitting. It looks like an amazing festival.”
Find Milly on the main stage at 3:20pm, accompanied by fellow musician Nick Roberts.
Opening the event is Parnell District School’s kapa haka group followed by St Joseph’s Catholic School’s multicultural group, starting the day.
Tipas is known for bringing a rolling groove in a dub-rock, electronica, bass heavy setting. Duo Seth and Louis will have everyone of all ages dancing.
Four Stand Up Stand Out participants Joel Taime, Temaleti Tupou, Henri Woodley and Jazmin Ugapo will grace the stage, traversing a range of genres from R&B to soul.
Stand Up Stand Out is an annual music and dance competition for youth run by Auckland Council.
Other things to look forward to include native plant giveaways, a farmer’s market, food stalls, craft stalls, kids’ activities, a seed and seedling swap, and more!
