Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board and local community providers have been spreading cheer all year long and Christmas is no exception.
To start the holiday season off right, the board has funded several key Christmas events in the area, and the invitation is open to everyone in the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu community.
These free events are designed to bring people together, spread joy, and ensure that everyone can experience the magic of Christmas, no matter their circumstances.
Board chair Tauanu’u Nick shares, “Our board believes deeply that everyone in our community - whether young or old, single or with family, with children or without, big or small families, and people from all cultures and backgrounds - deserve to be part of the Christmas celebrations. This event is a gift to all - free, with fun giveaways and prizes not just for the kids, but for adults too.
“Beyond the fun, it’s about connection and offering a much-needed break from the hustle of the season. We know the holidays can be tough for some, and for others, it’s a time to give back. With our community partners like the Ōtāhuhu Town Hall Community Centre, Ōtāhuhu Business Association, Māngere Arts Centre, and Whāre Koa Māngere, we hope to offer something meaningful that helps lift the spirits of those who need it most and spreads joy to all. You don’t need to leave our community to find special events - these events have been created with you in mind, and so much love and care have gone into them.”
The festive line-up
First up is the Ōtāhuhu Town Hall Senior Christmas Lunch on 2 December an event aligned with the board’s Local Board Plan to ensure seniors have access to the services and support that enhance their well-being. Moreover, this gathering provides a wonderful opportunity for seniors to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships within their community.
Next, is the team from the ‘House of Love’ with their Whāre Koa Māngere Community groups Christmas shared lunch on Thursday 5 December. An event that celebrates the incredible work of local community groups who dedicate themselves to serving others throughout the year. Now, these selfless groups can be served in return.
Following on from this, Sau E Siva Creatives, the South Auckland-based Pacific dance theatre collective, will host A Festive Waltz of Christmas on Friday 6 December, at the Ngā Tohu o Uenuku / Māngere Arts Centre. With an Island Ballroom theme, this enchanting soirée promises to sweep you into a whirlwind of rhythm and island wonder. Another enjoyable event for elders in the community to join in this magical celebration. RSVP to the Siva creatives team by 3 December.
The celebrations continue with the Ōtāhuhu Town Hall Community Centre Christmas Party and Carols on Thursday 12 December, followed by the Ōtāhuhu Christmas Carnival on Friday 13 December. Over the course of two delightful days, the entire community is invited to immerse themselves in a variety of activities, giveaways, food, and much more.
Bakulich adds, “A big thank you to all our community partners, volunteers, and everyone who has gone above and beyond to help. Your support has made a real difference in giving back to our community. While we may not have loads of funds, this board is deeply grateful for your continued dedication and the heart you put into making these events, truly special.”
Come share in the joy of Christmas with us.
