Have your say on the Panmure sign

Panmure sign

Consultation is open to determine the next steps for the Panmure sign.

The 15-metre retro-style, space-themed sign was located at the centre of the Panmure roundabout, before it was removed in 2019 to make way for the Auckland Transport Eastern Busway project.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair Maria Meredith says it’s great to start community engagement to pave a clear path forward for the sign.

“We know the Panmure sign holds a nostalgic significance for many Panmure residents, and there will be lots of interest for this consultation to determine the next steps for the sign, and what the community would like to see for its future.
“There are a number of different options the community can provide feedback on, and although the original sign can’t be returned to the same location it was previously due to space constraints, there are creative ways to incorporate a new life for it, or the community may decide the funding is best used elsewhere,” says Maria.

The project has a budget of $250,000, with Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board set to decide the future of the sign.

Possible outcomes for the sign

The community feedback is open to all suggestions, and some of the options for its future include:

  • Install a new, smaller version of the original sign in a different location in Panmure

  • Create a new sign or art piece inspired by the iconic design elements of the original sign

  • Support an art project inspired by Panmure’s heritage (e.g., a mural, sculpture, or series of installations)

  • Allocate the funds to another community project such as a community grant or park project.

History of the Panmure sign

The Panmure town sign was installed on a roundabout in the west of Panmure in 1994.

It was designed to reflect the growth of the township between the late 1940s through to the 1960s.

In 2019 the sign was removed during work on the Eastern Busway.
