Point Chevalier is set to welcome its newest community facility next year – with a new modular library set to open its doors in May 2025.
Having been closed since October 2022, the new modular facility will provide an enhanced library experience for the community, replacing the current pop-up service available at Huia Road.
Albert-Eden Local Board chair Kendyl Smith says it’s fantastic to have more certainty of when the new library opens – but acknowledges the local board is disappointed the opening date is later than initially expected.
“We’re excited to welcome the new modular library into the Point Chevalier community, it will be a huge uplift in experience for our users and council staff working there, however, we understand the additional delay is frustrating for the community and we’re disappointed it’s been pushed out by a few months, so we really do thank you for your patience over this time,” says Kendyl.
“Our dates got pushed out due to the time needed for resource consents. However, it’s great we’re in a position to start planning towards a fixed date of when the new facility will open, it’s been a long time coming, and it will be worth the wait.
“The new library will be a great addition to the Point Chevalier community, and it will provide the same level of services as the previous library, including popular programmes and amenities such as Wriggle & Rhyme, public computers, printing, wi-fi access, study spaces and general librarian-provided services,” adds Kendyl.
New, modern and fully serviced facility
The building will also have a modern look and feel, with the 166sqm facility consisting of exterior weatherboards, heat pumps, double glazing, power points for charging stations and a deck.
The modular library will be situated close to the older library in the town centre square, which is scheduled to start being deconstructed in late November/early December.
During the deconstruction hoarding and fencing will wrap around the worksite to ensure public safety.
Also, during the demolition of the site, the project team will re-use and recycle parts of the old building for future council projects, ensuring a sustainable process.
When the new library opens in May, the current pop-up service at Huia Road will close, with a phased closing period, and the site will return to the community as a venue available for hire.
It’s expected the new modular library will be in use for around 5-7 years, with planning for a future outcome for library services in Point Chevalier to continue in the interim.
A confirmed opening date, as well as a public opening day event for the new library will be made available in early 2025 – with more details to follow on the Albert-Eden Local Board Facebook page closer to the time.
