A new plan is set to empower the Howick community to better prepare for and respond to emergencies.
The Howick Local Board Emergency Readiness and Response Plan, created with Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), offers practical guidance to help residents and businesses stay safe before, during, and after an emergency.
The plan responds to lessons learned from the devastating Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, which highlighted the importance of local preparedness and community support during emergency events.
Board chair Damian Light says, “We’re pleased to present the new Howick Local Board Emergency Readiness and Response Plan. Getting this ready has been a priority for us to ensure that we’re all ready for emergencies. We know from recent experiences that we need to build community resilience, and this plan provides the platform to help achieve this.”
It identifies the area’s top hazards and provides tips on reducing risk, preparing for emergencies, and navigating the recovery process.
Developed through consultation with diverse community and faith-based groups, subject matter experts, and key agencies. The plan is designed to meet the unique needs of the 153,570 residents in the community.
Printed copies will be available in libraries and community centres, while a digital version will soon be accessible on the council website. Planning is underway for further rollout, including translated versions, to ensure that everyone in the community is prepared.
A hazard has the potential to adversely affect people, property, the economy, the environment or other assets that we value. Climate change is increasing the frequency and impact of severe weather events that create an emergency in our communities.
The Howick local board area is a vibrant, thriving community nestled in a diverse part of Auckland. With a strong business presence, excellent educational achievements, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and local tourism, there's something for everyone to enjoy. From natural wonders to cultural and historical landmarks, Howick offers both fun and educational experiences. As Auckland’s most populous local board area, it’s not only home to a wide range of people, but also a supportive network of neighbours and community members ready to help each other in times of need.
“Having a plan helps make any emergency much less stressful for everyone. The best time to be prepared is before you need it, so please get your household or business plan in place now. It’s also a great way to connect with your neighbours, friends, and communities to share and discuss your plan. If an emergency happens, it’s vital that we look after each other.
“We know from experience that in times of need our communities of Howick, Pakūranga, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tāmaki, come together to help each other. We’re grateful for the amazing individuals and organisations who have stepped up in the past and have volunteered to be involved again,” adds Light.
When the Board received and endorsed the plan, they thanked Auckland Emergency Management for their mahi (work) in developing the plan, working with the local community and Board to develop the resource.
