East Auckland playgrounds need your help!

Everyone remembers the joy of visiting a playground as a child – whether it was the excitement of the seesaw, the freedom of the swings, the rush of the slide, the challenge of the climbing frame, or the spinning fun of the merry-go-round. There was always that one favourite piece of equipment that you couldn’t get enough of, and you’d spend hours playing on it, lost in the thrill of the moment.

It’s these kinds of experiences, and many others, that the Howick Local Board is asking for the community’s feedback on how to improve the playgrounds in its area for all ages and abilities.

The consultation is open for feedback from Monday 11 November 2024 to Sunday 9 February 2025.

The board oversees and maintains more than 70 playgrounds in the area, but rising costs make it difficult.

The development of larger playgrounds (currently these include Howick Domain and Cockle Bay Reserve) has become popular destinations for families, with many other Howick communities asking for something similar in their area.

Board chair Damian Light says, “We know we need more accessible, inclusive, and interesting play options across Howick, Pakūranga, Botany, and Flat Bush. But with a limited budget and rising costs, we're working hard to maintain what we've got, but it's a challenge. As our population grows and changes, we need to adapt our playgrounds to respond to the changing needs of our communities.”

To deliver a plan that ensures their play spaces are creative, inclusive, unique, and caters to all ages, East Aucklanders can have their say on:

  • what they use playgrounds for

  • how well they think the playgrounds in the board area (includes Pakuranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tāmaki) provide play options for different age groups

  • which activities they regularly take part in when they use council-owned open spaces and parks

  • if they prefer skate parks and bike pump tracks next to, or separate from, other play areas

  • how easily can they access information about council playgrounds, play areas and amenities like toilets and seating areas.

One of the key questions asked is what factors are most important to people when choosing a playground to visit. This includes mobility access, sensory-friendly features, availability of accessible facilities, the playground's location, the surrounding environment, shelter, and secure fencing, all of which contribute to creating a safe and welcoming space for everyone. These insights play a crucial role in shaping the plan.

Take part and have your say:

  • go online

  • pick up and complete a feedback form at a library with council services

  • post your completed form to: Howick playgrounds, Freepost 190198, Auckland Council, Victoria Street West, Auckland 1142.
