This summer students at One Tree Hill College can play sports while being protected from the sun, thanks to a large new canopy over its artificial turf. Auckland Council contributed the bulk of the funding for the project – through a $1.28 million grant from Auckland Council’s Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund.
Councillor Josephine Bartley who represents the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward and sits on the Community Committee says she’s thrilled the council has been able to help the school build this asset which will benefit students for years to come.
“Auckland Council is proud to have helped One Tree Hill College achieve their goal of a brand-new canopy, under which rangatahi can enjoy playing sport in all weather conditions.
“Young people are the future of Tāmaki Makaurau, and the council regularly allocates grants to sports organisations, recognising the need for high-calibre facilities across the region. The grant to One Tree Hill College is one of many which benefit young people.
“Importantly the turf under the canopy can be used, not just by the school, but by people in the wider community – young and old.
“Facilities like these – not owned by the council – are a vital part of the region’s sport and recreation facility network which give Aucklanders spaces to stay active, participate in sport, and connect.”
The school was one of 24 organisations to receive a slice of $15.3 million of funding through the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 grants rounds.
The dome design outdoor sports canopy, approximately 67m long by 35m wide, covers the artificial turf court area. The canopy comprises continuous arched rafters, galvanised steel columns with concrete foundations, a PVC fabric membrane and half-round galvanised steel spouting.
Nick Coughlan, Principal of One Tree Hill College says the new canopy is a win-win for both the school and community.
“The new canopy will give our students a much-needed year-round facility to participate in sports with essential protection from both the sun and the rain.
“I’d like to thank Auckland Council for the generous financial support, without which this project wouldn’t be possible.
“As well as benefitting our students, the community can use this facility as we hire it out to sports groups outside of school hours.”
