Arriving in the diverse Puketāpapa Local Board area for the first time can be an exciting – and also challenging – time, especially for migrants, former refugees and international students.

To make that transition easier for newcomers into the Puketāpapa community, the local board has adopted a Welcoming Plan as part of its commitment to the Welcoming Communities programme.

Welcoming Communities is an international programme led in Aotearoa/New Zealand by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to assist councils and their communities to create more welcoming and inclusive environments for newcomers to their area.

Puketāpapa Local Board first joined the programme in 2022, and the Welcoming Communities programme is continuing to deliver in variety of ways.

“Puketāpapa is a diverse area with a number of different ethnicities living and working together, however, it’s never easy coming to a new suburb, and we want to be able to help newcomers feel connected and integrated into Puketāpapa,” says chair Ella Kumar.
“With the local board adopting the Welcoming Plan, we’re providing support, information and ultimately making it easier to integrate into our fantastic area.”

Whau, Kaipatiki. Albert-Eden and Otara-Papatoetoe local boards have also joined Welcoming Communities programme, which forms part of the wider Welcoming International programme, which is a coalition of initiatives in seven countries to advance inclusion and belongings in locations worldwide.
