Riding the train just got cheaper thanks to Auckland Transport zone changes.

Taking public transport from Franklin will be even cheaper from the start of February, a move Franklin Ward Councillor Andy Baker hopes will see more people using services.

He says Auckland Transport’s latest fare review, which comes into force on 2 February, introduces a reduced zone structure that will lower fares to the city.

“Those taking buses and trains will be charged for a maximum four zones, meaning they’ll pay less.

“When electric trains return these fare changes will be a game-changer for Pukekohe.”

He says the simplified zone system is great news for those taking the longest trips.

“The annual fare adjustment does mean there will be an increase in many fares, but it’s offset for us by the changes that mean commuters will travel across fewer zones, lowering their costs.”

Baker says last year’s moves designed to focus Auckland Transport on delivering services are already paying off.

“AT has come in for a lot of criticism, much of it unjustified, but credit where it is due. Fares are rising across the network, just as costs are everywhere, but the zone changes are smart and will get people out of their cars.

“That’s good for commuters, removes congestion from the roading network, and also cuts greenhouse gas emissions so that the climate benefits.”

Baker says AT’s $50-a-week fare cap already helps many thousands of people and could still be useful for frequent bus, train and inner harbour customers.

The changes create two new zones in the south, northern Manukau merging Manukau north and Beachlands; and southern Manukau merging Manukau south and Franklin.
