Puketāpapa is one of the most culturally diverse areas in Tāmaki Makaurau, with English the second language for a large number of its residents.
With Puketāpapa being such a unique and diverse location, the local board has funded a community event to bring people together, improve connections and showcase the area as a welcoming place.
The first Welcome To Puketāpapa Day event will get underway on Saturday 22 February at the Wesley Community Centre, and the one-day event brings together local community champions, groups and networks that make the area special.
“We’re lucky to live in an area that is welcoming, inclusive and incredibly diverse. It’s also important our community is aware of the many resources, advocates and key groups we have to help make the transition into Puketāpapa that much easier, says local board chair Ella Kumar.
“We’re proud to fund our first Welcome to Puketāpapa Day event, and hopefully this can become an annual tradition, as a place for relationships to foster and communities to grow together."
Don’t forget your passports!
A lot of Puketāpapa residents have had to travel to get here, and at the event a different kind of passport will be required.
At the event seven zones will be set up, with each zone promoting a unique theme.
Organisations and groups with similar themes or focus will be clustered together within these zones.
The first 200 participants will be given a passport, after visiting each zone and collecting coloured stamps, which can be used to claim a $5 or $10 value equivalent voucher.
The voucher can be redeemed when making purchases at the food and drink stalls on-site. This helps foster meaningful engagement and supports local vendors.
