In April the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board will decide the future of the Panmure sign, following public consultation.
The original 15-metre retro-style, space-themed sign was located at the centre of the Panmure roundabout, before it was removed in 2019 to make way for the Auckland Transport Eastern Busway project.
At the end of 2024 the community was asked to provide feedback on options on how to spend an allocated budget of $250,000, with one of the options to install a new replica sign, as the original sign could not return to its original location as the roundabout was replaced by traffic signals.
At a local board workshop in February, the project team went through the themes of the engagement and some preliminary feedback, with community support for a new, replica sign to be installed in a different location.
Also, there was support for the original sign to be repurposed, such as incorporating it into a new art piece or using parts of it.
The final decision will be made by the local board at the April 29 business meeting. Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board chair Maria Meredith is looking forward to advancing the project.
“There’s been a lot of hard work to get to this point, I’d like to thank everyone that provided feedback during the engagement period. The local board took ownership of the sign in 2023, and since then engaged with locals to find out what the future of the sign should be.
There’s a lot of interest in the next steps and outcomes, and at our business meeting at the end of April we’ll be able to communicate how we’ll move forward with the Panmure sign.”
History of the Panmure sign
The Panmure town sign was installed on a roundabout in the west of Panmure in 1994.
The local board took over ownership of the sign from Auckland Transport in 2023.
It was designed to reflect the growth of the township between the late 1940s through to the 1960s.
In 2019 the sign was removed during work on the Eastern Busway.
