Ōrākei residents are being encouraged to give feedback on council’s review of dog policies and bylaws including local dog access rules.
There are proposed changes for two parks in the area: Madills Farm Recreation Reserve and Glover Park.
These changes would require dogs to stay off sports fields at all times, and be on-leash near the sidelines while sport is being played.
Dogs would still be allowed off-leash in areas away from the sports fields.
“We welcome everyone including canine companions to our parks,” says Ōrākei Local Board chair Scott Milne.
“To protect and maintain sports fields for their intended purpose we are proposing changes to two locations, specifically regarding dog access to sports fields. Dogs are still invited to enjoy other areas in these parks.
“Field surfaces have previously been damaged due to digging and use when wet, which can make them unsafe for people playing sports. Repairing this damage comes at a cost to the ratepayer. This is why we are making these recommendations.”
As well as looking at local dog access rules, the consultation covers recommendations to set a limit to the number of dogs a person may walk at one time, and clarify existing rules in the policy and bylaw.
