Improvements to some local roads, improved pedestrian access and better cycling infrastructure is on the way after Henderson-Massey Local Board approved a $1million investment in five transport projects to enhance safety, accessibility, and sustainability in key areas of the community.

The upgrades focus on creating a safer and more accessible urban environment, with a mix of pedestrian, cycling, and road safety improvements, the projects aim to enhance daily commutes and encourage sustainable transport options.

Safer, more accessible streets

Board Chair Chris Carter emphasised the importance of the projects.

“Our priority is to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone—whether they’re walking, cycling, or commuting. These projects reflect our commitment to smarter, community-focused transport solutions. We’re making sure every dollar is spent wisely to improve everyday life for Henderson-Massey residents.”

Funded projects

The board allocated $1,008,841 to the following projects:

  • Tui Glen Henderson Creek Shared Path – Sections B & C: $10,000 to complete the ongoing path upgrade and lighting work at Tui Glen/Chilcott Brae

  • Peninsula Primary School Pedestrian Crossing Upgrade: $160,000 for a raised zebra crossing on Waipani Road, ensuring safer routes for students and families

  • Tui Glen Henderson Creek Shared Path Lighting – Section A: $445,000 to improve lighting along Toi-Coletta Esplanade, enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists

  • Keeling Road Cycling Path: $230,000 to create a dedicated cycling route, encouraging sustainable transport

  • Awaroa Road Pedestrian Improvements: $163,841 to upgrade crossings and footpaths, improving pedestrian access and safety.

Priorities

In addition to these approved projects, the board also agreed where to prioritise funding should more funding or cost savings become available.

The first priority is ensuring any existing projects receive additional funding if needed to complete them on time. The second priority would be to apply any extra funds to:

  • Henderson-Massey Bus Stop Upgrades ($60,000)

  • Great North Road Slip Lane Crossing Improvements ($375,000)

This is a prudent measure that will mean any and all leftover money is spent wisely, says Chris.

“By planning ahead for any extra funding or savings, we’re ensuring available money is put to good use. This approach allows us to get projects underway as soon as funds become available, making the most of our resources for the community."
