The voices of East Aucklanders driving real change — real talk — this is their story.
Launched in February 2025, through authentic and thought-provoking interviews hosted by the talented Anju Desai a dedicated community teacher, event presenter and guest speaker; Neighbourhood Stories is a podcast that delves into the journeys of remarkable locals.
This heartfelt series shines a light on the extraordinary contributions of East Auckland’s everyday heroes, volunteers, educators, business owners, and community advocates who are making a positive impact.

Supported by Howick Local Board through their community arts service Arts out East, this series amplifies the board’s efforts to create a stronger, more connected, and inclusive community in an authentic, creative and accessible way.
“Howick Local Board is committed to programmes that support an involved, connected, active and healthy community. We want to promote wellbeing and to ensure we are part of an inclusive society where everyone feels valued, respected, supported and safe.
“Neighbourhood Stories shines a spotlight on these incredible individuals, giving them the platform they deserve. We hope this platform not only inspires their communities to connect, but also open doors for others to reach out and benefit from the incredible services they provide,” says board chair Damian Light.
Howick Local Board has the largest population by local board area in Auckland. Just over 141,000 people (Census 2018) live in the area, and this is predicted to increase to over 150,000 by this year. It is also home to diverse communities.
Guests share their personal experiences, challenges, and insights. They include community advocates, people who cross cultural communities, charity workers and healthcare professionals all telling their story.
