A new single-lane roundabout is being built on State highway 22 on Paerata Road between Pukekohe and Paerata Rise as part of a wider effort to prepare for South Auckland’s rapid growth.
With an estimated 120,000 new residents expected in the next 30 years, infrastructure projects like this are essential to ensuring the region remains well-connected.
The roundabout will provide access to the future Paerata Railway Station and upcoming housing developments, helping to improve traffic flow and safety while supporting both commuters and freight get to where they need to.
Franklin Councillor Andy Baker says “Whilst the disruption is going to impact on road users during construction, and adds to other growth-related works and disruption on the southern motorway, it cannot be avoided if we are going to manage the development that is happening in our part of the world.
“It is short term pain for long term gain, and it is pleasing that NZTA has listened to requests to minimise the impacts on road users as best they can. This is an important project which will be fit for purpose for the future.”
Temporary bypass in place to minimise disruption
To allow construction to take place with minimal disruption to traffic, a temporary bypass road will be used. This will keep State Highway 22 open, ensuring people can continue to travel while the roundabout is being built.
From Sunday 9 March to Thursday 14 March, crews will be working overnight from 9pm – 5am to connect the temporary road to the highway. A stop/go operation will be in place, allowing traffic to move in both directions, but delays are expected.
Plan ahead for travel delays
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel during the transition to the temporary road.
