In Papakura, many young men have incredible potential but face barriers that can make it harder to reach their goals. The Positive Pathways program is designed to help rangatahi develop in confidence, leadership and life skills.

Run by Kura Cares, a charity focused on supporting families and communities, the organisation are past recipients of the Papakura Local Board community grant.

Positive Pathways is a 10-week programme for young men aged 15-18. It teaches essential skills like resilience, time management, and goal setting. While also including mentoring, physical training, and fun outdoor activities to build confidence and teamwork.

Making an impact in our community

Papakura Local Board Deputy Chair Jan Robinson says the Positive Pathways programme is important for rangatahi success.

“The results of the program speak for themselves, more than 50 rangatahi have completed the programme in 2024, which is a fantastic result.

“Rangatahi leave with stronger mindsets and a clearer vision for their future, we are very pleased to support this important kaupapa.”

Future success on the rise

With growing demand, Positive Pathways plans to accommodate up to 100 rangatahi in 2025, giving even more young men the tools and experience they need to thrive.

Kura Care Chair Richie Aholelei says “Helping our rangatahi goes beyond offering support; it’s about empowering them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to take control of their own futures.
“We support our young people, guiding them with aroha and ensuring they have access to the resources they need to thrive. Our passion is our people, and when we invest in our rangatahi, we strengthen our entire community,” he says.

Positive Pathways is set to become a NZQA accredited, participants who complete the programme will gain recognised qualifications that can help them in further education and employment.

Investing in programmes like Positive Pathways is an investment in a brighter future for rangatahi in Papakura.
