Two new road safety projects are on the way, after the Puketāpapa Local Board invested $632,000 to help school students and pedestrians cross busy roads safely.
The board approved the two new projects for Auckland Transport to deliver, which includes a new crossing facility for Halsey Drive Primary School in Lynfield and a new pedestrian crossing for the busy Dominion Road.
The midblock Dominion Road crossing will add a new signalised crossing between Keystone Avenue and Landscape Rd, a section of 800 metres without a crossing and that has a high number of pedestrian traffic, with the school crossing also enhancing safety for connections.
Local Board Chair Ella Kumar says safety in the community is paramount.
“We feel strongly about safety in Puketāpapa, and both these projects we’ve funded will allow for improved and safer connections in our community.
“School children at Halsey Drive Primary School will be able to cross the road safer, getting in and out of school while the large midblock section of Dominion Road will also create easier connections with the addition of a new crossing.”
The Halsey Drive Primary School project has a significant safety backstory, with Auckland Transport working alongside community police officers, engineers, and the AT parking team to address the school's safety concerns at the school gates, advocating for a new crossing at the back entrance of the school.
With support from the school, new walking school buses were implemented to enhance student safety.
Additionally, the AT Travelwise team implemented parking interventions with the police and student leaders to assist young students in the 'drop-off zone' for improved safety outcomes at the school.
Auckland Transport will progress into the design phase for both projects, with the work expected to be completed by June 2026.
