Speedway fans buckle in – the countdown is on for speedway racing at Waikaraka Park from November, with the upgrade work now underway.
Last October the Governing Body approved the transfer of $11m from the Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Long-term Plan funding to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board to implement parts of the Waikaraka Park Master Plan.
Now the work is commencing, following a site blessing led by Paora Puru from Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua in early March.
Local Board chair Maria Meredith says the project is tracking well and is on schedule.
“It’s exciting to have these upgrades underway on this much-loved venue in Onehunga. We’ve been a long-time supporter of the improvements for the venue, which align with our Waikaraka Park Masterplan, and we’re now starting to see the physical works take shape which is fantastic.”
The upgrade is broken into two phases, with the pit extension work starting in March, followed by the racetrack, pit wall, floodlights and site upgrades to follow from April/May.
It’s expected all the work will be completed by October, ahead of the racing season commencing in November.
