Three transport projects aimed at improving pedestrian safety in Waitākere Ranges are set to begin, thanks to an almost $800,000 investment from the Local Board.
The projects focus on making busy traffic areas safer for pedestrians by improving crossings and accessibility. They are:
- West Coast Road Pedestrian Improvements ($250,000)
Upgrades to the pedestrian crossing by relocating to a safe location outside the Caltex service station at 297 West Coast Road. The current crossing has poor access and poses safety risks for both pedestrians and vehicles. A recent near miss involving a school child highlights the urgency of this upgrade. - Parrs Cross Road Pedestrian Improvements ($273,445)
Upgrade the existing refuge island to a formal crossing, which has seen multiple incidents in recent years. Two vehicles were rear-ended while giving way to pedestrians, and another vehicle hit the median island. These improvements will make crossing safer for all. - Seymour Road Crossing Improvements ($273,445)
Upgrade the existing refuge island to a safer formal crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, improving connectivity between Parrs Park, the Oratia Stream cycleway, and Sunnyvale Train Station. This upgrade aims to encourage more active transport options in the community.
Community benefits and board support
Waitākere Ranges Local Board Chair Greg Presland emphasises the importance of these improvements.
"Making pedestrian crossings safer and more accessible is a huge benefit for residents and local businesses. It’s especially important for schoolchildren travelling to and from school. We are pleased to be able to fund these projects and look forward to seeing them take shape."
Next Steps
The projects will now move into the design and investigation phase, with completion expected by June 2026.
