Work to repair a major road slip a few hundred metres from the Manukau Lighthouse is underway following a dawn blessing on 31 March 2025.
The 80-metre slip occurred during the early 2023 Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods on Manukau Heads Road on the Āwhitu Peninsula. An estimated 90,000 cubic metres of soil moved during the slip, severing the road connection, and closing public access to the lighthouse and nearby properties.
Since then the project has developed a business case, undertaken geotechnical testing, prepared designs for a new road and stormwater, and been through the resource consenting process. The new stormwater pipes will remove the risk that a similar slip occurs on that slope.
AT expects Downer NZ to take around four months to complete the repairs - working between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday. The road will remain closed to all but residents throughout the construction.
