A replica version of the Panmure sign will stand tall over the next year – just down the road from the original's location – to a new site along the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway.
The decision to relocate a new, replica sign to 525 Ellerslie-Panmure Highway (the old location site no longer exists) is the result of engagement and engineering feedback.
Local Board chair Maria Meredith says it’s great to land on a decision.
“We’re pleased to have a clear path forward for the Panmure sign, which was removed in 2019 as part of Auckland Transport’s Eastern Busway work. The feedback from the public consultation was split between installing a replica, re-using the old sign and reallocating the funds to another project.
“We do feel this is the best outcome with all things considered, we wanted to keep the original sign, but it’s not a viable or sensible long-term option due its age, condition and engineering requirements. Having a similar, replica sign, in a new location, will provide a visible landmark for the community to enjoy.
“Thanks to everyone that’s been engaged on this project and those that provided feedback, we can now move forward with getting the new sign created.”
The project team will now begin the detailed design and approvals process, including seeking landowner approval from Auckland Transport and consents from utility providers.
If possible, parts of the existing sign will be used in the new replica. The local board will update the community on timeframes following further investigation.
History of the Panmure sign
The 15-metre retro-style, space-themed sign was located at the centre of the Panmure roundabout, before it was removed in 2019 to make way for the Auckland Transport Eastern Busway project.
It was designed to reflect the growth of the township between the late 1940s through to the 1960s.
