Ever wondered where to hold a dance class? Thought about whether you can have your wedding at Auckland Domain? Wanted a spot for your band to play a gig? Been keen to hold a market day?

There are lots of community venues, parks and spaces owned by Auckland Council that are available for public use.

“We are lucky to have a fantastic range of much-loved venues and public places in our area,” says Waitematā Local Board chair Genevieve Sage.
“We often get questions about how to book these locations for events or activities so that you can make the most of what they have to offer.”

Depending on the activity, you may need to book a spot, apply for licences, consents or landowner approval, or get a permit.

Indoor spaces

You can make regular or one-off bookings at our venues for hire such as community centres or halls. Find venues and booking information on the Auckland Council website.

Some suggestions for meeting rooms in the city centre include Ellen Melville Centre, Central City Library and Myers Park Cottage. Other community centres often have smaller rooms for hire too.

Bigger spaces for gatherings, indoor fitness classes and performances in central suburbs include Grey Lynn Library Hall, Ponsonby Community Centre, Grey Lynn Community Centre, Freemans Bay Community Hall.

Please note: special terms and conditions apply if you plan to serve food or alcohol at one of our venues. Learn more.

Art classes

Studio One Toi Tū on Ponsonby Road has five different bookable rooms, some of which are ideal for meetings or presentations, and two which are creative spaces for “messy activities”.

If you’re looking for somewhere to do printmaking, painting or sculpting, this is the perfect facility.

Parks

Outdoor spaces such as local parks are managed differently. They are public places for everyone to enjoy, and only need special permission for certain activities.

If you are wanting to use the space to carry out activities which result in financial gain such as hosting a market, you will need landowner approval and may need other permits and licences.

However, fitness training – including boot camps – does not require landowner approval unless you are using equipment that digs into the ground. There is a code of conduct which is important to read should you be planning to run fitness training in a park.

For any events that are to be held in public areas, including parks and roads, you may require an event permit. Find out more about event permits, and check if your event needs one.

Filming in public places requires a film permit. Learn about film permits.
