Waiheke residents are being called to give feedback on a strategy to invest and advocate to improve housing supply and availability on the motu with consultation open now until Wednesday 28 May 2025.
Waiheke Local Board Chair Cath Handley is encouraging all residents to give their feedback on the board’s recent updates to its 2019 Waiheke Housing Strategy, which has been informed by community feedback.
"The lack of investment in healthy affordable and long-term housing on Waiheke has negative flow on effects for our whole community, so it’s time to make your voice heard on this critical issue by engaging in the consultation and giving feedback today. It’s going to be a long battle to address some of these systemic issues, so we need to get a steer from you that we have our priorities right."
Handley explains that while many of the factors that affect housing costs are outside the board's control, the updates to the housing strategy are focused on realistic ways that the board can invest its limited funds, and advocate to improve the supply and affordability of housing on Waiheke.
How you can have your say
The easiest and quickest way to give feedback is at akhaveyoursay.nz but postal options are available.
The consultation ends on Wednesday 28 May 2025.
What’s next?
The board will include feedback from this consultation to create a Draft Waiheke Housing Strategy. Local board members will discuss any changes to the draft and adopt a final strategy at a local board business meeting on Wednesday 23 July 2025.
Local board members will use this strategy to help guide ways to improve housing for all residents on the motu.
