Devonport-Takapuna Local Board grants new 10-year Lease for North Shore Rugby Club
-
The club will have an option for a further 10-year renewal after the initial term expires

Board Chair Melissa Powell welcomes the decision
Tries will keep coming at one of the country’s oldest rugby clubs, after Devonport-Takapuna Local Board agreed a new long-term lease for North Shore Rugby Club.
It means the club will remain at its home on Devonport Domain/Vauxhall Sports Fields, ensuring the club’s future at the heart of local sport is firmly locked in.
The new lease spans ten years, with the option of a further ten-year renewal. This replaces the previous lease, which expired in May 2023 and had been rolling over on a month-by-month basis.
Commitment to community wellbeing
Board chair, Melissa Powell, says the decision reflects the board’s commitment to community wellbeing and active lifestyles.
“We know the value this club offers our community. We recognise the dedication of many volunteers and parents to keep this club alive and thriving," she says.
"North Shore Rugby is an institution in our community and plays a vital role in bringing people together through sport.
"This lease not only secures a home for the club but reinforces our support for inclusive, grassroots sport that strengthens local connections."

North Shore Rugby Football Club
Founded in 1873 and incorporated in 1957, North Shore Rugby Football Club is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected clubs. It is home to over 1,600 members—1,255 men and 345 women—and provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in rugby and community activities.
The club owns and maintains its building at 28 Vauxhall Road, Devonport, and carries all operational and maintenance costs through a mix of membership fees, grants, sponsorship, and hireage. A site inspection conducted in October 2024 confirmed the facilities are in good condition and well used.
The club’s efforts to promote inclusivity and foster community engagement through sport align with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Plan 2023, particularly its goals under Tātou Tāngata / Our People and Tō Tātou Hapori / Our Community and Facilities.
Under the new deal, the club will lease around 712 square metres and pay $1,300 a year plus GST. A Community Outcomes Plan will be added to the lease to highlight the club’s continued role in giving back to the community.
The lease approval is a strong signal of confidence in the club’s future and a welcome step for sport and community in Devonport.
