Point Chevalier’s new modular library has a revised opening date of October 2025.

The date change is due to a range of factors, which include additional time needed for the resource consent, a complex procurement process, as well as increased timeframes required for the build.

Albert-Eden Local Board Chair Kendyl Smith says it’s disappointing news.

“We’ve worked hard as a local board to get the new library open and running in Point Chevalier, and we’re really sorry there’s another delay. We thought the new library would be ready by around May/June, and unfortunately there have been additional challenges that we haven’t been able to overcome.

“It’s frustrating, for the board and the Point Chev community. However, we’ll continue to work with our wider partners and stakeholders to activate the town centre where we can.

“We’re not just unloading a new building onto the town square, there’s a range of other work that goes with it, such as landscaping, decking, utilities and more. We want to be sure the library is serving the community from day one, and unfortunately this requires more time.”

The new library will provide a new lease of life into the vacant town square, creating an open and warm space, with heat pumps, double glazing, power points for charging stations, additional lighting, a new deck and more.

Once open, it will replace the current pop-up service at Huia Road.

It’s expected the new modular library will be in use for around 5-7 years, with planning for a future outcome for library services in Point Chevalier to continue in the interim.
