Community grants are now open to help Howick groups make a positive impact.

Local groups in the Howick Local Board area can apply for a minimum of $3000 in funding through the first round of the local boards 2025/2026 Community Grants Programme, for projects starting after 1 October 2025. Apply here.

The board area includes Pakūranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tāmaki.

Deputy Chair Bo Burns says the grants are an important way for the local board to support a wide range of community groups, charities and schools.
“We’re really lucky in East Auckland to still have a budget for grants, and for locals to be able to access these funds which support local projects and initiatives. The application process is easy, and local board members are always happy to chat with groups about how to submit a strong application, including understanding our priorities, best practices, and protocols,” says Burns.

The grants support programmes or projects that meet one or more of the boards outcomes:

  • targeted at supporting people in the community to feel safe, engaged and connected
  • well planned public spaces that support active, healthy and sustainable lifestyles
  • heritage, local arts and cultural diversity are valued
  • the natural environment is protected, restored and enhanced
  • a prosperous local economy supporting business growth and opportunity
  • and effective and accessible transport choices.

Higher priority

Priority is given to events or activities in the local board area that benefit the community, show other funding support or contributions, and support recovery from recent weather events.

“Community groups are the heartbeat of our area. With just a bit of funding, they create safe, welcoming spaces, bring people together in powerful ways and deliver real impact to residents. Supporting them through our grants programme is one of the best investments we can make. Applicants should make sure to reach out if they need advice," adds board member Mike Turinsky.

Grant reporting

As part of the grants process, everyone who receives funding from the Howick Local Board must complete a report on their project or event. If you haven’t done this for a past grant, you will not be eligible for a grant.

Community funding

Local grants are available once or twice a year, with round one open 2 June 2025 until 11 July 2025. Grants of $3,000 and up are offered to support arts, community, environment, events, heritage and sports and recreation groups.

Quick response grants are generally for $500 to $4,000 and are offered more frequently, up to five times a year.

Grant applications must align with the board’s funding priorities. Funding follows the 2023 Board Plan priorities. More grants details here.
