  • New Waste Festival to be delivered as part of the 2026/2026 funding
  • Increased awareness and activations for the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre

The Albert-Eden Local Board is playing a key environmental role with a $458,000 investment across a range of projects for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The board has approved its Environmental Programme, which enables the community to have more climate friendly programmes and to protect vulnerable ecosystems.

The programme funds a wide range of projects and initiatives, such as eco events, EcoNeighbourhoods support, Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek, Waitītiko/Meola Creek restoration investment and more.

Albert-Eden Local Board chair Kendyl Smith is proud of the investment into the environment.

“We saw first-hand the damage done by weather in the 2023 floods and more recently the Easter floods that impacted pockets of Sandringham, and future weather events are unfortunate a likely scenario, the more we can do as board to invest into the environment and also provide opportunities for the community to learn more through events and other projects can only help.
“As a local board we’re also proud to provide funding to groups such as Urban Ark, Maungakiekie Songbird and Friends of Oakley Creek. These great organisations do fantastic mahi, with lots of volunteer hours, providing a productive investment to our community.”

Spotlight on the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre

One of the new initiatives to come out of the work programme is the introduction of the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre Pū Mātauranga/Education Hub activations programme.

This programme will deliver a range of community zero waste and sustainability related workshops/activations, which will occur each quarter – being primarily held at the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre.

There will also be a new Waste Festival to be delivered as part of this work. This festival highlights the importance of waste, with limited resources paving the way to creative ways to introduce more sustainable ways of living, and making it easier for the community to feel comfortable around tacking waste solutions.
