From basic to brilliant: Māngere-Ōtāhuhu residents are needed to help transform Imrie Park.
Right now, Imrie Park in Māngere has just the basics when it comes to play, and the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board believes that local tamariki (children), rangatahi (youth and whānau / family) deserve more, and want to know what locals want from the play area in the park.
The board has committed $1,050,000 for an upgrade, with final plans to be published in September 2025 and an expected completion date of June 2027, so hearing from the community is vitally important to get it right.
Board chair Tauanu’u Nick Bakulich says, “This project is about more than just a playground upgrade - it supports the needs of our current residents, and planning for those who’ll call this area home in the future.
“Imrie Park sits in a prime location, just off a main road and close to key places like Robertson Road and Jean Batten Schools, hotels, cafés, and within reach of the Māngere Town Centre. As Māngere continues to evolve, it’s time to invest in safe, fun, and inclusive spaces where everyone can connect, play, and thrive.”
Imrie Park’s current playground: it’s time for a change

The local board aim to upgrade:
-
the playground with exciting, modern equipment
-
create a safe and inclusive space for tamariki of all ages and abilities
-
add a perimeter path for walking, biking, easy access by connecting Imrie Avenue to Chingford Close
-
and most importantly, ensure community input helps shape the final design.

What other three activities would you most like to see included in the playground?
Here are a few things we’re especially keen to hear from you about:
-
how often you visit the park
-
how you usually get there
-
if you prefer other playgrounds - and what makes them better
-
whether anyone in your whānau has a disability that affects how they access or enjoy the playground
-
what types of play equipment or activities you'd love to see in the upgraded playground
-
whether you support adding a 2.5metre wide path around the park for walking, biking, or easy access.
