Broken yellow lines are often a quick, cheap and easy fix to address bottlenecks on our roads – and are something you can ask Auckland Transport to do fairly easily.

If you’re a local who drives through Ellerslie-Panmure Highway in Mt Wellington, you’re probably breathing a sigh of relief right about now – broken yellow lines have been painted along the busy section of highway between Ballarat Street and Clare Place.

These lines come as a direct result of feedback from local residents and motorists, who were frustrated with constant bottlenecks and serious safety concerns caused by the relatively small number of cars that parked in the area.

“We’ve listened to our community, and we have responded to their concerns with quick, decisive action that comes at very little cost to the ratepayer,” said local board chairperson Maria Meredith.

“This small change will make a big difference for safety and traffic flow. Previously even a handful of parked cars was enough to cause major issues for the 25,000 vehicles that travel along this busy road every day, leading to several near misses and even some crashes.”

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki ward councillor Josephine Bartley was similarly delighted by the initiative, which followed a two-week public engagement period in which more than 100 submissions were received by AT, with most in favour.

“This is a fantastic example of AT and council listening and responding to what our community has to say,” she said. “It’s a win for local residents and it’s a win for everyone passing along this major arterial road.”

Meanwhile, in response to broader community input, AT will also be exploring further improvements in the area as part of its ongoing efforts to make Mt Wellington’s roads safer and more efficient for Aucklanders.
