The Puketāpapa Local Board is ensuring the environment is in good hands, with its biggest-ever funding injection of $840,000 for the 2025/2026 financial year.
The board has approved the Local Environmental Programme, which enables the community to have more climate friendly programmes and to protect vulnerable ecosystems.
The 2025/2026 work environment programme covers a wide range of projects and initiatives, such as eco events, EcoNeighbourhoods support, Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek investment and more.
Puketāpapa Local Board chair Ella Kumar says its integral the board invests into the future.
“It’s clear the impacts that climate change are having on our communities, and the more we can do as a board to invest in our local environmental projects, upgrades and initiatives, the better equipped we are for future climate scenarios, as well as raising awareness on the importance of our environment and the role we can play in sustainability.”
Improved quality for Wairaki Stream
Hillsborough’s Wairaki Stream is set for a brighter future, with more than half of the overall work programme funding ($509,000) going towards the project, which features a process called daylighting.
Daylighting allows the waterway to its natural form (removing pipping) to improve the wider ecosystem. The project also includes the development of an integrated pest management plan, native planting, pest plant removal and additional weed control on private properties between Caronia Crescent and Oriana Avenue.
The project will be completed within a two-year timeframe.
