New Onehunga upgrade, the Waiapu Precinct, will start in June 2025.

The upgrades include: new spaces for families, improved walking and cycling connections, a new playground, more green areas.

To minimise disruption, construction will be staged over several years, so that impacts on local parking and town centre access are minimised.
Onehunga’s town centre is set to become better-connected and more vibrant with the construction of the Waiapu Precinct from June.
The new Waiapu area sits in the middle of Onehunga’s town centre, linking the Dress Smart precinct with the future Te Pumanawa o Onehunga precinct, unlocking a more inviting town centre, as well as a new supermarket development, along with provision for future housing.
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board chair Maria Meredith says the upgrades will be a game-changer for Onehunga.
“It’s awesome to see so much investment in our local board area, and the Waiapu Precinct work will unlock a critical part of the Onehunga town centre. The development will provide new spaces for families, improved walking and cycling connections, a new playground, more green areas, key infrastructure upgrades, and better links throughout the area.”
The move into construction follows a detailed and community-led engagement phase, with public input in 2020 shaping the public engagement in 2024, before the local board approved the design last year.
To minimise disruption, construction will be staged over several years, so that impacts on local parking and town centre access are minimised.
During construction approximately 50-90 public carparks will remain available, with potential for additional parking areas to be opened as work progresses. Businesses will remain open and accessible throughout.
What works are being undertaken in phase one of the upgrade?
This first phase will start on June 16 and will continue through to early 2026. The key components include:
- Wastewater infrastructure works
- Stormwater system upgrades
- Installation of tree pits
- Footpath improvements adjacent to the Woolworths supermarket.
