Auckland Council is helping sports organisations build new infrastructure for residents to use and enjoy for years to come.

Twenty-two organisations have received a share of $9.5 million funding through the council’s Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund (SRFIF), approved by the Community Committee on 29 July 2025.

The full list of Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund recipients for 2025 / 2026 can be found further down in this article.

Councillor Angela Dalton, chair of the Community Committee says non-council-owned sports facilities play an important part in the region’s sport and recreation facility network.

“Auckland Council is proud to help sports organisations across Tāmaki Makaurau to enhance, upgrade and develop facilities so Aucklanders of all ages and walks of life can stay active and participate in their chosen sport.”

“From netball to tennis, rowing and bowls, we are supporting a variety of grassroots organisations and codes to enhance what they offer to Aucklanders.”

Kenneth Aiolupotea, General Manager Community Wellbeing says the council is proud to help grow sport and recreation opportunities for Aucklanders, through the Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund.

“I’m delighted with the high calibre applications we received and the council is looking forward to working with successful applicants to build new facilities, and improve existing sports infrastructure which will create more opportunities for Aucklanders to get active.”

How funding is allocated

Sports organisations applied for a Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund grant – a contestable funding process.

Auckland Council staff and an independent assessment panel considered the applications and assessed the capability of the organisations, achievability of the project, current project status, and funding status.

All projects are expected to leverage additional sources of funding and use SRFIF as a part-funder for the total project costs, often as "cornerstone funding’"

All 22 shortlisted projects were recommended to receive grants from a total of $9,521,045. The funding was approved by the council’s Community Committee on 29 July 2025.

More information on the council’s grants programme that supports Aucklanders’ aspirations for a great city, including the Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund can be found on the Auckland Council website.

Next funding round
