The Avondale Community Centre has closed its doors permanently after testing revealed high levels of black mould in the kitchen, hall, and venue hire spaces. Some parts of the building had already been closed for some time due to similar issues.

All regular hirers and community groups who use the space have been contacted, and alternative arrangements are being explored where possible.

The section of the centre used by local arts group All Goods remains open for now, but further testing will be carried out soon to ensure it’s safe to use.

Auckland Council Area Operations Manager Shane Hogg says the decision was not taken lightly.

“We know how much the Avondale Community Centre means to the neighbourhood—it’s been a place for connection, celebration and creativity over the years. Closing it is a tough call, but the health and safety of our community has to come first.”

Further updates will be shared as they become available.
