What are Auckland’s biggest opportunities and challenges… and what will you do about them?

Nominations are now open for the Auckland Local Elections 2025 and it’s your opportunity to get involved and make a real difference for your community.

Auckland Council recently published a pre-election report, providing context on our region’s current state and future prospects, including the types of decisions that will be required over the coming years.  It’s an essential read for candidates and voters alike to learn about what’s possible for Auckland and what’s needed to nurture our city’s growth.

The council’s plans and policies aim to help Tāmaki Makaurau thrive and manage growth. To continue that work, we need our future elected members to ask the important questions on behalf of all our communities and make strategic decisions that will help guide us into the future.

Leading Auckland forward means focusing on:

  • maximising productivity and economic growth
  • strategic infrastructure investment
  • stewardship of over $80 billion in assets
  • strengthening climate resilience and sustainability
  • creating thriving communities
  • growing sources of funding for council.

As New Zealand’s economic powerhouse, Tāmaki Makaurau generates 40 per cent of the country’s GDP and is home to a third of the population of Aotearoa. This puts us in a unique position to partner with central government and global partners to drive sustainable growth.

With our population expected to reach 2.3 million in 30 years, elected members will need to focus on how Auckland makes the most of its major investments and ensuring the sustainability of growth and development around transformative projects like the City Rail Link, Eastern Busway, and Central Interceptor. They will also need to assess whether existing assets—roads, parks, community facilities—still meet Aucklanders’ evolving needs.

Armed with the pre-election report and key strategic plans like the Long-term Plan and Auckland Plan 2050, I hope candidates will be inspired to lead with vision and dedication.

What will you do to help build a more liveable, sustainable, well-connected and thriving Auckland?

Read more about this in the Pre-election Report 2025.

Nominations close Friday 1 August, midday. You can access the nomination form on the VoteAuckland website, pick up a hardcopy from select Auckland libraries, Election Services or download from VoteAuckland.
