In Māngere-Ōtāhuhu, more support is being given to a wider variety of play opportunities.

The Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board has adopted its 2025 Play Plan - a fresh, fun approach to making sure everyone, no matter their age or ability, has plenty of chances to play. Whether that’s at the park, outside school, or in the neighbourhood, play is being made more accessible and inclusive across the area.

The plan guides future investment in play across the community, based on the belief that play belongs in everyday life, everywhere.

Chair Tauanu’u Nick Bakulich says the Play Plan is a growing plan that changes with the needs of the community.

“We know our budget is limited, so we need to be smart and deliberate with how we invest. That means focusing on what works, exploring cost-saving approaches like shared resources and community volunteering, and working closely with local leaders to build something that lasts,” he says
“We also see the value in forming strategic partnerships with local businesses, non-profits, and community groups to expand the reach and impact of this plan. It will grow as we gather feedback, trial new ideas, and adapt to the changing needs of our communities. Innovation is key to that journey. We’re keen to explore natural play elements, test new concepts through pilot projects, and take bold but measured steps to improve how play is delivered in Māngere and Ōtāhuhu.”

What's in the plan?

The plan offers a wide range of options for the local board to incorporate wider play activations, such as:

  • playful street art
  • playful installations
  • installed adventurous nature spaces
  • on-site adventurous nature spaces
  • StoryWalks

Next steps

The local board’s next step is to select the play ideas to include in their action plan — this is the plan that turns local priorities into real projects in the community, showing what’s happening, where, and when.
