Randwick Park is set to become safer for locals with a major investment of nearly $1.2 million going into traffic-calming measures. The initiative is being driven by the Manurewa Local Board, following strong community calls for action on dangerous driving.
Earlier this year, the board reallocated $527,000 from another project to focus on improving road safety in Randwick Park. Auckland Transport (AT) has now confirmed it will contribute an additional $700,000, bringing the total investment to more than $1.2 million.
Manurewa Local Board Chair Matt Winiata says the confirmed funding reflects the board’s focus on community wellbeing and safety.
“Our community raised their concerns, and we made the call to shift funding where it was needed most. This is a win for Randwick Park demonstrating our commitment to public safety".
Randwick Park has long faced issues with unsafe driving, especially on streets like Riverton Drive and Magic Way. Residents raised concerns about speeding, dangerous overtaking, and the risk to children and pedestrians.
The funding will support the design and delivery of traffic calming infrastructure, with measures likely to include features that reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian safety.
While the final design is still to be confirmed, similar projects have included raised crossings, road narrowing, and speed tables to encourage safter driving.
Randwick Park was identified as a priority area in the Manurewa Local Board Plan 2023/2024. The suburbs youthful population, active sports facilities, and growing number of people walking and cycling made it a key area for investment.
Construction is expected to begin early to mid 2026, with AT still to run its community consultation and detailed design phase.
