- Jellicoe Park to feature new lighting setup for 2025 Christmas in the Park
- Public consultation resulted in a return to the traditional style of lights opposed to the laser lights
- Lights expected to be used for future public events.
It’s a case of Back to the Future for Christmas lights at Jellicoe Park when permanent LED lights are installed later this year.
Laser lights were trialled at last year’s Onehunga Christmas in the Park event following on from the 2023 event which didn’t feature stringed lights because of their cost and potential damage to the tree.
Public consultation on the laser lights supported the traditional style of Christmas lights, with the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board acting on this feedback and funding a new permanent 600 globe LED lighting display.
The new lights are more cost-effective because the council owns them, instead of hiring them each year.
The project team will use a safer methodology to install the lights on the tree for a longer period and with no impact on the health of the tree.
Board chair Maria Meredith says the board has listened to the community feedback.
“We trialled the new laser lights last year, and although some of the community enjoyed them, there was a strong preference for a return to a more traditional style of Christmas lights at our annual Onehunga Christmas in the Park event. We’re looking forward to seeing the new lights provide Christmas cheer to the community later this year.”
The LED globes are controlled by an online controller, and the project teams can power the lights and change colours remotely, which is more efficient usage and reduces production costs.
This style of lighting is used at other locations including Stockade Hill Park, Onehunga Town Centre, the Otara Tupu Youth Library and Selwyn Village Point Chev.
The lights can also be used for future holidays and other public events such as ANZAC Day and Matariki.
