Sports organisations for disabled people are among those receiving a boost from Auckland Council through this year’s Sport and Recreation Regional Programme Grant.
Ten organisations were allocated a share of $508,000 through the grant, approved by the council’s Community Committee on 29 July.
Councillor Julie Fairey, deputy chair of the Community Committee says she’s pleased Auckland Council continues to support sports organisations with their goals of getting Tāmaki Makaurau residents active.
“It’s great to continue the council’s support for grassroots organisations’ events and programmes, directly helping Aucklanders to participate in sport and recreation.
“We acknowledge the great mahi of these organisations and we’re especially proud to support a number of grants focussed on supporting young disabled people’s physical activity.”
“These grants align with a key aim of the fund: getting more Auckland young people active more often through sport and recreation.”
Blind Sport NZ has been allocated $15,000 for their Blind Tennis programme, with $20,000 to Disability Sport Auckland for sport programmes and the Warriors Community Foundation has been allocated $60,000 for The Tama Toa and Disability and All In. Seven other sports organisations were also allocated funding through the grant.
Kenneth Aiolupotea, General Manager of Community Wellbeing says the grants are much-needed funding for organisations that carry out a great service to Tāmaki Makaurau.
“I’m thrilled these local sports organisations are receiving a boost from the council, strengthening their sport and recreation offerings to the community.”
“These organisations play a critical role in helping Aucklanders to be more active.”
