- Mount Wellington War Memorial Park sports fields to be upgraded.
- The new fields will be sand-based, which will double the amount of playing hours with fewer weather disruptions.
- The upgraded fields are the result of funding made available from the Fix and Finish Funds.
Mount Wellington War Memorial Park sports field users will be able to double the number of playing hours per week following investment from the Fix and Finish Fund.
The Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board has received $1 million from their Fix and Finish Fund application to convert an existing soil field into a sand carpet surface — a proven way to significantly increase usability and reduce ongoing maintenance costs
The Fix and Finish Fund resulted from the Long-term Plan 2024-2034 and the sale of Auckland International Airport Ltd shares held by the legacy Auckland City and Manukau areas.
Local boards from those areas were eligible to apply to the fund, which provides one-off funding to community projects.
Local Board chair Maria Meredith says it’s a game-changer to upgrade the fields.
“It’s critical that sports clubs can access fields, however, due to the weather often there are a number of cancellations. In 2018 nearly one in five games were cancelled due to poor field conditions. Soil fields are more than seven times more likely to close than sand-based ones.
“By being able to upgrade the fields from soil to sand-based, we’re able to simply have far fewer disruptions, more games, and ultimately an improved sporting experience for all, we’re so pleased to get this funding and secure a brighter sporting future for the Mount Wellington War Memorial Park.”
It’s expected the upgrade work will get underway from July 2026, with the fields to be upgraded by mid-2027.
