Beach Haven's Shepherds Park, home to the Birkenhead United Association Football Club, will increase its training capacity with lighting on two more sports fields.
  • Kaipātiki Local Board is allocating over $2.6 million to upgrade its sports and recreation facilities in the 25/26 financial year.
  • The upgrades to lighting and sports fields are designed to increase year-round usage for the local community.
  • Facilities being upgraded are Shepherds Park, Kaipātiki Park, Stafford Park, Onepoto Domain and McFetridge Park

Kaipātiki’s sports and recreation facilities will get a major boost following the local board’s decision to increase allocation to sports field upgrades to $2,684,200 in the 25/26 financial year.

One of the board's largest ever investments in sport and recreation, the allocation will focus on increasing the year-round use of facilities for the community, with lighting upgrades increasing user time into the evening and field renewals improving drainage for fewer closures during wet periods.

The facilities scheduled for upgrade include:

  • Shepherds Park - $550,000 for sport fields lighting
  • Kaipātiki Park - $684,200 for sport fields renewals
  • Stafford Park and Onepoto Domain - $650,000 for sport fields lighting
  • McFetridge Park - $800,000 for sport fields renewals and lighting

The Shepherds Park upgrades have been warmly welcomed by the Birkenhead United Association Football Club which is based there.

“This is something the local community has been really crying out for,” explains President William Taylor.

“The club has had some major growth in recent years, and the added lighting will make two extra fields available to train on during the evening. This year Birkenhead United have had a large number of their football teams training away from Shepherds due to field demand. This has had a significant impact on its community and the club.
"This is more than just about lighting fields, it's about supporting active well-being within our community and allowing the people to reconnect with Shepherds Park. This will be a major positive for the club and the local football community, so huge thanks to the board for their support.”
