- More on-the-ground presence in Panmure to improve safety.
- Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board improves Panmure safety with Crime Prevention programme.

There’s a beefed-up security presence in Panmure – thanks to a local board investment.
The need for more security on the ground in Panmure is a response from local businesses concerned by safety in and around the Panmure town centre.
The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has acted, with their Crime Prevention programme providing an increase in security presence in the town centre.
Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board Community Broker, Ossie Manukuo, says the programme is a good example how the local board works and responds to community and business requests.
“Safety is always paramount in communities, and we’ve been aware there have been a call to have an additional presence on the ground from a number of businesses in Panmure. The local board have listened to the business community, and helped pave a way for a safer, and ultimately better-connected are across Maungakiekie-Tāmaki.”
Security Liaison Officer Taniela Kaivelata, who is part of the team on the ground, adds:
“It’s been great working with the council whanau and the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board as part of this mahi in Panmure. The Tamaki East Community Security crew are doing good work for the community and the people of Panmure.”
The Crime Prevention programme is a community-led, collaborative approach, which includes mahi with stakeholders including the Glen Innes, and Onehunga Business Associations, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and NZ Police.
Another positive spinoff from the initiative is the establishment of Tamaki East Community Security (TECS), a privately-owned security company.
TECS addresses safety concerns and local unemployment by recruiting from the community into paid security roles.
Each recruit undergoes training in legal responsibilities and public engagement and holds a Certificate of Approval (CoA) – a mandatory qualification for all private security personnel.
Panmure has served as a primary training ground, where new security officers learn to manage local hotspots and support business owners.
These young professionals work alongside Auckland Council Compliance Wardens and the Panmure Business Association, as well as collaborate with a security specialist who manages and shares CCTV footage with NZ Police or Insurance companies when required.
The community patrols have been met with strong support, with business owners providing positive feedback and appreciation for the improved safety on the streets.
